International PhD Students

Many students are interested in pursuing PhD studies in countries other than their own, and and in internationally renowned institutions. The value of a PhD degree is often a factor of the scientific reputation of the institution and of the motivation of the host team.

The number of foreign students enrolled in LIRMM PhD Programs has increased considerably in recent years (half of all doctoral students). LIRMM is proud to welcome and train a diverse population of young scientists hailing from all around the world.

The following pie chart shows the distribution of our PhD student population by nationality (as of 01/01/2019):

The Lab attracts many young students wishing to pursue their doctorate studies in France, but also established foreign researchers who find it particularly interesting to come and spend valuable research time in our midst. In general, these foreign scientists are hosted by LIRMM teams for periods ranging from a few weeks to several months or even a year. They collaborate with LIRMM researchers within the host teams and benefit from the expertise and structure of the Lab.

European Projects

From its inception to present day, LIRMM researchers have developed international partnerships with many academic laboratories and companies.

Since 2010, the LIRMM has been involved in more than 40 European projects:

International Partnerships

Joint Robotics Laboratory JRL

CNRS-AIST Joint Robotics Laboratory (JRL), UMI3218/RL, is a joint laboratory co-established by the French National Center for Scientific Research (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, CNRS) and the Japanese National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). It is located at the Intelligent Systems Research Institute of the AIST in Tsukuba, Japan.

Using a humanoid robot as their main platform, LIRMM and AIST researchers work closely to investigate and promote ways to increase the functional autonomy of robots. The main research topics include: task and motion planning and control, reactive behavior control, and human-robot cooperation through multimodal interface integrating brain-computer interface (BCI), vision and haptics.

French-Italian research LAboratory on hardware-software Integrated Systems (LAFISI)

The LAFISI joint laboratory was co-established by the LIRMM and Politecnico Di Torino, in Torino, Italy. Its main objective is to promote French-Italian collaboration in the field of hardware-software integrated systems, by developing novel approaches for built-in self-tests and design-for-tests, test pattern generation and fault simulation, performance verification, diagnosis, fault tolerance and system reliability.

French-Canadian IAL - miREGEN - Regulation of microRNA genes

This joint laboratory is Franco-Canadian partnership. It was co-established by the LIRMM (CNRS 5506) and the IGMM (CNRS 5535) on the French side, and by the University of British Columbia’s Children's & Women's Health Centre, (British Columbia branch) on the Canadian side.

These teams investigate the transcriptional regulation of genes, particularly that of microRNAs.
